Volunteer Support us

The search for the UK’s smallest mouse begins this week on TVNR!

Langholm Map

We have recently discovered what we think are harvest mice on Tarras Valley when we found some little woven grass nests during a volunteer session, which is very exciting! They are a species which is critical is Scotland, so we are hoping that we do indeed host a population of the UK’s smallest rodent.

According to the Mammal Society,  these little mice weigh in at only 4-6 grams, they create ball-shaped nests woven from grass to sleep and breed in and they enjoy eating a variety of seeds, berries, and insects. We are going to be doing some volunteer harvest mice surveys in February to see if we can investigate further see if we can officially confirm their presence on the Tarras Valley.

If you’d like to join in, you are more than welcome and all guidance for doing the survey will be given on the day and done in groups so everyone can learn more about it. The dates will be:

Wednesday 4th February

Wednesday 11th February

Wednesday 18th February

Wednesday 25th February

The sessions will run from 10am-12pm, and we’ll be meeting at Laverock bird hide.
