Tarras Valley Textile

Langholm Map

Our Tarras Valley Textile celebrates the rich diversity of natural life and the close community found in the Tarras Valley. Working with artists Ann Smith and Helen Walshthe local community has come together to create a beatiful visual representationof the area highlighting some of our key species and special locations. Made using textiles woven in Langholm (many of which would otherwise have ended up as waste) we have sewn, needle felted and embroidered together, each pass of each needle contributing to our intricate textile landscapefull of colour, texture and connection.

Earlier this year, The Langholm Initiative were excited to be approached by Community Land Scotland to take part in an arts based project to celebrate 100 years of community land ownership called ‘Where we Stand’. A project supported by Creative Scotland. Given the history of Langholm and its history of textiles and farming, it seemed a natural fit to work with Creation Mill . Emma from Creation Mill worked with local artists Ann Smith and Helen Walsh along with many volunteers to create a map of the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve. The map was formed using remnants of local textiles with embroidery and felting techniques and the end result is truly stunning.

Several other community land owners, including the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust, Govanhillbaths Community Trust and several others have taken part and the resulting works of art are currently on tour round Scotland in the Travelling Gallery Bus. The bus will be coming to Langholm on Tuesday 23rd July and will be based in the Kiln Green car park. Entry is free and the gallery will be open from 10 until 4 so please come along and call in.

After visiting Langholm, the bus will carry on on its tour around Scotland which comes to an end in mid August. When the tour is complete, the map will be returned to Langholm so we will be looking at where best it can be displayed.

Our thanks to everyone who supported the project and took part, especially all the volunteers who created the amazing piece.
